PADDLE BOARDING (SUP)

Stand up Paddle Boarding, or SUPing as it’s known, is perhaps the greatest invention in paddle sports ever. Anyone that’s been worried about capsizing a boat, or having their legs inside it, or gets uncomfortable easily rejoice!

These are not problems you will have with a SUP! They are so friendly; people even have their dogs on the front as they cruise along.

WHAT MAKES IT SO GOOD?

Our inflatable SUPs are about 10-foot-long, and about 3-foot-wide, and about 6 inches thick, that’s a big balloon to be stood up on, and super stable as a consequence. This makes them ideal for first time SUPers. You can start out kneeling down, and when you are ready you can get up on your feet and cruise around like a pro. The great thing is, is that if you fall off, it’s super easy to get back on board so you can try whatever you want on the board, handstands, standing on one foot or whatever, and it doesn’t matter if you topple over!

We take the SUPs to all sorts of places, depending on the weather. Journeys are interesting, so if the conditions allow we might cruise along the coast visiting the secret little coves of Holy Island. Or we might go to the inland sea, or float up or down the Cymyran Straits using the tide to propel us as we journey through the beautiful surrounds.

We can even take SUPs in the surf, as they’re like giant surfboards, and you can practice catching waves and your pivot turns!

“A perfect day out”

Greg was extremely professional and really looked after us (especially a very nervous teenager). It was quite a relaxed and laid-back approach which suited us absolutely. A perfect day out.

WHEN DO YOU GO STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING?

We can do it year round, but obviously some times of year are a lot warmer than others... A lot. May through to September tend to be warmer air temperatures, and better weather so that’s the prime time. In saying that though, the sea has warmed up all summer, so by October it’s at its warmest, and with Autumn storms rolling through we often get some surf to play on. We have full winter weight wetsuits that are designed for cold water, and with wetsuit hoods if it’s particularly chilly, most people are fine even at cold times of year for a half day.

WHY CHOOSE ANGLESEY OUTDOORS?

For starters were in a great location for it! With stunning coastline on all sides of us, and great options for windy weather when we need them. We have some great SUPs for beginners, and some great kit for you to keep you comfortable. Our staff are all experienced and qualified paddlers and really enthusiastic about the sport, so you’ll get the most out of your time on the water. We’ll have waterproof cameras so we can get loads of photos which we will share online.

WHO CAN GO PADDLE BOARDING?

It’s a very friendly sport, so just about anyone can do it. For journeys a reasonable level of fitness is useful. Because of the need for controlling the paddle and having the strength to move the board, we generally wouldn’t recommend SUPing for under 12’s.

DURATION OF ACTIVITY?

We tend to run SUPing as a half-day session. Though it can be combined with other activities, such as bush craft to make it a whole day session as journey along the coast exploring.

HOW MANY CAN PARTICIPATE?

We work with 8 people to one instructor, if you are a few more than this we can always get a second member of staff too. We wouldn’t have more than 12 in the water at once though even with two staff.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

We’ll provide you with the most important things: Winter weight wetsuit, wetsuit hood (if really cold), helmet (for under 18’s) and buoyancy aids for those that need them.

You would need to bring:
  • Swimming costume, to wear under the wetsuit. Gents, baggy shorts are not good under a suit, but trunks or even underwear are fine for this.
  • Thin shoes, the emphasis here is on thin. We need shoes to protect our feet on the beach and any walking we do, but when on the board big shoes are a bit clumpy, so skinny shoes like school pumps are ideal, or a wetsuit boot. It’s optional to wear socks.
  • Towel, to get changed at the end. Depending on where we go this might be open air changing so a big towel is best.
  • Some spare clothes to change into at the end of the day (underwear, socks etc.)
That’s it! You need minimal stuff. If you do have any medication that you usually carry, make sure you bring that too, we can look after it for you at the beach.

DISTANCE TO ACTIVITY LOCATION?

This very much depends on the weather, if it's perfectly flat calm, our local spot in only a 5 minute walk away (though we would drive to carry the SUPs). If that venue isn't ideal we have a range of options within 20 minutes.

IS IT SAFE?

With the right choice of venue and weather conditions, Paddle Boarding is made very low risk, and you can trust in our experienced staff that they will choose the right venues and look after you well whilst on the water. We provide all the necessary safety kit for you too, so rest assured, you're in good hands! We are AALA licensed, meaning we meet and exceed very high standards of safety for adventurous activities.
