WHEN DO YOU OFFER BUSHCRAFT SESSIONS?

We can offer it year round. On some days you’ll want to build a shelter very quickly... But in the woods you don’t ever feel the worst of the weather. Other days there will be no need for a shelter at all, and building a fire on the beach in the sun will be bliss. Because bushcraft is kind of a lesson in life skills without modern technology, there will always be something that you need to do in any weather, be it build shelter, find food, or keep warm.

WHY CHOOSE ANGLESEY OUTDOORS?

We’re located in a great place for it, with beaches nearby to build fires on, and ideal woodland not to far away. We can even do it on site as we have loads of space, and fire pits and all we need right here. The staff you will have with you are very knowledgeable about the natural world and very resourceful when it comes to solving problems and coming up with great solutions, which is what bushcraft is all about!

WHO CAN DO THE BUSHCRAFT SESSION?

Anyone can do this! It’s an activity that can totally be tailored to your needs. All you need is the determination to make things work as a team.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

The following:
  • We’ll provide the key things we need for the sessions, such as fire kits, pots and pans and such.
  • You just need to come prepared to be in the wild for a day. Bear in the mind that you’re likely to get smoky if we make fires and there is a good chance you’ll get a bit grubby building shelters and such, it is all part of the fun!
  • Clothing: Anything suitable for the weather. So bring waterproofs in-case it rains (we can always leave them behind here if it’s a fine day) Do wear full length trousers, and a full length top (just in-case of little scratches from branches or sparks from fires, and the sun)
  • Robust shoes will be best, like boots or a good trainer. Avoid flimsy shoes.
That’s it! You need minimal stuff. If you do have any medication that you usually carry, make sure you bring that too, we can look after it for you at the beach.

DISTANCE TO ACTIVITY LOCATION?

Depending on what it is you're wanting to do, the venues range from being on site here at the centre, to the local beach, or for the very best shelter building, around a 30 minute drive.

HOW MANY CAN PARTICIPATE?

We can take a few more people doing bushcraft than some of our other activities. So we have one instructor to 10 people. If you are one big group, split into two separate groups it can be great fun to have shelter building competitions! If combining bushcraft with other activities, you might have to go by the ratios for that activity instead.

DURATION OF ACTIVITY?

Generally, we do half day sessions of ‘simply’ bushcraft. But we can combine it with other things too. A great combo is to do a combination day of bushcraft on the Stand up Paddle Boards (SUP), so we would cruise around on the water, then land somewhere and build a fire and cook up some pancakes or whatever else for lunch, then continue on our journey.

Any questions...
Bushcraft is a great way to become more in touch with nature. We can offer all sorts of different things when it comes to our bushcraft sessions.

WHAT MAKES IT SO GOOD?

Learning skills that feel like they take you back in time. Knowing you can manage the absolute basics in life without all the modern technology that we’re all so dependent on. And making a fire is a skill that will earn you respect throughout your life every time you go camping or want a chilled evening on the beach around a fire.

SHELTER BUILDING

We would head over to some local woodland, where we use the natural items around us to build some amazing shelters. Big logs resting in trees to make a frame, and then smaller branches make up the walls, covering it in pine needles to finish it off. It’s quite remarkable how sturdy and weatherproof a shelter you can build using nothing more than branches and twigs! Sometimes we go to some sand dunes and build a shelter in the dunes with the same materials.

FIRES

It’s a great skill to make a fire. We don’t spend hours rubbing two sticks together! We use some little fire flints to get a spark, and then nurture the spark with all the right ingredients until we have a nice fire going. Then why not cook some pancakes on it using flour from the local wind mill and eggs from our hens? And how about a mug of hot chocolate boiled up in our Kelly kettle using our home grown fire? Oh, and don’t forget the marshmallows too! Oh and the Damper bread on a stick is good fun too.

FORAGING

There are loads of natural and wild foods that we can make and eat, and we can even cook stuff up on our home made fires. From nettle tea and soup, gorse petal tea, to some shellfish that we might find on the beach. We would never advise to eat just anything you find, some come and join people who know the best things and learn from them.
